Holistic, Christian counseling & wellness for women & teen girls in Cary and throughout NC

Do worry and panic define you?

You can’t get your brain to shut off. Lying in bed, driving, sitting at your desk…the worry is overwhelming. Maybe it’s about your kids, your job, your marriage, or your health. On and on it goes and you can’t control it.

Decision making is paralyzing and you’re constantly doubting yourself and asking other people for advice. Social gatherings may be limited or avoided entirely because of the fear of doing or saying something wrong.

The restlessness makes you constantly on edge. Heart palpitations, muscle tension, lack of concentration, and irritability grab your attention. Panic attacks may strike, and then you find yourself freaking out about when and where the next attack will come.

You’re told you’re “not supposed to worry” and then feel guilty and out of control because you can’t cope with it. “Something must be wrong with me,” you tell yourself. It’s exhausting.

Do these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Excessive worry and having a hard time controlling it

  • Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge

  • Easily fatigued

  • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank

  • Irritability

  • Muscle tension

HOPE IS HERE

Discover freedom & begin living with peace, calm & balance.

The goal of therapy for anxiety is to reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of symptoms to the point where they no longer defines your life. You will increase your awareness of your thoughts and identify the core fears that lead to anxiety. Then you will be able to examine those fears and practice aligning your thoughts with the truth.

You will begin to move your body to reduce stress hormones and release feel good hormones. You’ll identify food and drink that affect anxiety. Good sleep habits will allow you to fall asleep and stay asleep, feeling rested in the morning. Muscle tension will decrease as you learn how to tame your nervous system.

The social anxiety and avoidance that have characterized your life will give way to engaging with the special people in your life. You will be able to spend time with the people you love without the crippling fear of saying or doing something wrong.

Self compassion will replace self hatred as you begin aligning your life to your values. If desired, you will learn to lean into God for strength when facing anxious fear. You’ll be equipped with scripture and prayer to combat activating events.

Anxiety counseling can bring freedom from crippling worry, panic, & overwhelm

A holistic anxiety therapy approach incorporates mental, physical, spiritual, and social practices to both prevent symptoms and cope with them when they arise. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness are especially helpful for anxiety.

We’ll work together to develop a strong self care routine to prevent anxiety, panic, and overwhelm as much as possible. This includes mindfulness and self compassion practices, journaling, movement, nutrition, social connectivity, and spiritual disciplines. We’ll teach breathing practices and other grounding techniques to help your nervous system become less reactive.

We’ll also work together to develop a repertoire of coping strategies for when you have symptoms. This includes understanding how activators affect your thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and actions. You’ll learn new ways to interact with your thoughts and feelings rather believing and acting on them. You will recognize the core fears that underlie your anxiety and make connections with possible trauma and past experiences that have activated your symptoms. If desired, you’ll have faith-based coping tools as well, such as scriptures, affirmations, and prayer.

Each session will leave you with new and tangible skills to help you feel empowered to cope with fear, worry, panic, and overwhelm.

Common questions about anxiety therapy

  • Common symptoms of anxiety include excessive worry, having a hard time controlling it, feeling restless, being easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and trouble sleeping.

  • First, we always recommend seeing your doctor to rule out any medical cause of your symptoms. After your provider has done so, you may find your symptoms are in line with panic attacks.

Common symptoms include heart palpitations, pounding heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, feeling like you’re choking, nausea/GI issues, dizziness, chills/heat sensations, numbness or tingling, feeling detached from yourself, fear of losing control, or fear of dying.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the “gold standard” treatment for anxiety. I am well-equipped to utilize CBT in sessions, and believe adding mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) is especially transformational.

  • Schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation. We’ll talk on the phone and get a better understanding of your needs and determine if we’re a good fit.

Common barriers for women seeking anxiety counseling

  • That’s hard. The thing to understand is a) you may not have been ready; b) you may not have been with the right counselor. The number 1 predictor of whether therapy will be effective is your relationship with your counselor. We go to great lengths to ensure we’re a good fit with you so that you can have the very best counseling experience.

  • Avoidance actually increases anxiety-it doesn’t make it go away. In counseling, we find the balance between avoiding it all together and becoming preoccupied with it.

  • You can; however, when anxiety is profoundly affecting your day-to-day, you’ll likely need someone to help you make connections to what you’re learning and your trauma history, family conditioning, etc. A trained therapist for anxiety can help you see your blind spots and challenge you to new levels of thinking and being.
